What can we learn from the success of Wikipedia?
The emergence of the not-for-profit, volunteer-created and maintained online encyclopedia coincided with Microsoft's development of MSN Encarta, a professionally produced encyclopedia delivered first on CD-ROM and later online. According to all the normal rules of business, Wikipedia should be long defunct by now, and MSN Encarta should be going strong. In fact, Wikipedia is the largest and most popular encyclopedia in the world while MSN Encarta was shut down in 2009.
