What *are* the differences in Canadian and U.S. copyright law?

Canada and the U.S. share a long border, and we tend to focus on the similarities between these two countries.  But each country is unique, and one area we could all learn more about is how their copyright laws differ.  CCM201. Canadian Copyright Law Principles can help bridge the gap in your knowledge, no matter what side of the border you're on.

Join Canadian copyright lawyer Lesley Ellen Harris of Copyrightlaws.com for this exploration of:

• the background and composition of Canadian copyright law
• the criteria for copyright protection (e.g. originality and fixation)
• what works are protected, and how to protect them
• ownership of works
• protection of rights and duration of protection

Copyright certificate course registration now open

Increase your copyright knowledge and gain confidence in dealing with copyright-related developments in your organization by registering now for the 2012 Certificate in Copyright Management!

Instructor Lesley Ellen Harris will lead participants through the maze of copyright principles and issues, from basic considerations to protection of Web 2.0 and digital content to the global perspective when dealing with copyright materials. 

The program begins this October with CCM201: Canadian Copyright Law Principles.  CCM201 is a program elective for most, but required for those in Canada pursuing a full certificate.  Then, in January, join us for CCM100: Introduction to Copyright Management:  Principles and Issues, which explores info pro roles and the importance of copyright compliance.

Courses may be taken individually or as part of the full certificate program.  SLA uses GoToWebinar technology to bring the classes to you, with the exception of CCM600 and CCM700, which are offered as full-day onsite courses in the D.C. area in June.

Copyright Management Program Graduates 19 in 2011

This year, 19 individuals completed their Certificate in Copyright Management coursework and received program diplomas from SLA CEO Janice Lachance. 

The graduation ceremony took place on Sunday, 12 June, at SLA 2011 in Philadelphia with 15 of the graduates in attendance.  After inspiring and congratulatory words from Janice, the graduates, Janice, instructor Lesley Ellen Harris, and I retreated from the CCM700 classroom for our group picture.

A record number of participants signed up for CCM courses this year, an increase of 39% over 2010.  Next year, a course on "The Author's Perspective on Copyright" will be added to the program. 

Dates for the 2011/2012 year will be announced in late July/early August.

CCM600. Copyright Compliance and Management (Saturday, 11 June, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)
