Yes, some publications are producing very colorful and busy infographics. But, to learn the basics, go to Presenting Numbers, Tables and Charts by Sally Bigwood and Melissa Spore. Here I learned that what Excel spits out for a graphic is often too cluttered to communicate clearly. Also, don't underestimate the clarity of a well-constructed table.

Infographics is "a" way, not "THE" way, like many other things it can be useful in some cases...
