Host a Visit from the SLA Presidents in 2012

There is still time to invite the SLA President to Visit Your Chapter in 2012.

Its not too late to see if SLA's president or president-elect can visit your chapter at a special event in 2012. If you would like to request a visit by either 2012 President Brent Mai or President-Elect Deb Hunt, complete a chapter visit request form prior to 15 January 2012. All requests will be reviewed by the Chapter Cabinet Officers in light of the SLA budget and the presidents' schedules. Please do not contact the presidents directly unless your chapter is seeking to fund the visit totally.

Your Board in Action

The SLA Board meets monthly (except January and June) on the second Thursday via conference call and twice each year in person:  at Leadership Summit and Annual Conference.  Many Summit attendees attended the Board meeting.  Several wanted to know more: what the Board is considering, how they can provide input that would be representative of their unit members, and then to report actionable items back to their memberships.  Your Board wants that, too.  After all, you elected them to represent you and your interests and to move the association forward.

Each month, a week before their meeting, the agenda and all documents will be posted to the Web in the Board of Directors section of the Web.  Please review and if you have input, send any comments to the Board at their group address Board@sla.org.  Your message will go directly to each member of the Board.  The minutes of the meeting record their actions and you will be able to report back to your unit's members.

Take this opportunity to learn more about SLA and you, too, may want to advance your leadership career by serving on the Board after you complete your chapter, division, caucus or committee leadership.

Leadership Summit Schedule Updated

Are you going to Leadership Summit?  Check out the details of our action-packed schedule.

The SLA Board meets, committees and councils meet, our SLA 2012 conference planners meet, and leaders from all over the world gather to learn and take care of association business.

Just a reminder that the Summit is a "green" meeting.  What does that mean?  We'll have a printed schedule and exhibits guide for you at the meeting registration.  Any handouts will be posted after the meeting on our Web site.  If you are a copious note taker, come prepared with your own notebook.

And, if you haven't registered, you may still register.

Leadership Development Institute Agenda Announced

If you are a chapter, division, caucus or committee leader in SLA, plan to attend the Leadership Development Institute on Sunday, 13 June at SLA 2010.  Its your chance to get an update on the association as it relates to our units from President Anne Caputo.  You'll have the opportunity to hear from several candidates who will share their vision for SLA in the near future. What's in store for SLA 2011 in Philadelphia?  Participate in alignment 's next steps and learn about that always hot topic of vendor and unit partner relationships.

Even if you are not a current leader but might want to learn more about how to step into a leadership role, this is the place you need to be Sunday morning.  Network with SLA's current leaders.

Units May Reserve a Chat Session with President-Elect Candidates in May

In an attempt to promote better communication among the membership, President-Elect Candidates Brent Mai and David Stern are offering to schedule online chat sessions for up to 50 simultaneous seats with any Chapters and/or Divisions that feel this might be a good way to air concerns or hear from the candidates directly.  These DimDim (a la WebEx) sessions will supplement the planned online statements to be produced on the Web and the future opportunity to meet the candidates in person at the Annual Conference.

The available chat times could be:
20 May immediately after the Chapter WebEx (5pm EDT in USA) or

Board of Directors Candidates Announced

Check out the just-issued press release announcing the 2011 Board of Directors candidates.  With input from so many interested members just like you, the Nominating Committee, chaired by Jan Chindlund, has compiled a slate of candidates with exceptional talent to lead SLA into the future.  Congratulations to Brent Mai, David Stern, James Manasco, Ulla de Stricker, Scott Brown, Richard Huffine, Nerida Hart, Jill Hurst-Wahl, P.K. Jain and Sara Tompson for accepting the nomination.  You will hear from them at SLA 2010 and a variety of mediums.  The election will be held in mid-September.

Inclusion Caucus Dissolved; Others Reauthorized

During the Leadership Summit, the SLA Board approved the dissolution of the Inclusion Caucus, due to reasons of inactivity and non-viability.   The members of this caucus have been devoted to the promotion of activities and best practices that foster inclusion with those with whom they work and collaborate.  Liz Blankson-Hemens, convener of the caucus, notified all caucus members and encouraged them "to channel their energy and commitment towards supporting the activities of the Diversity Leadership Development Program events at annual conference, such as the Annual Diversity Breakfast and the DLDP awards by offering up nominations and perhaps becoming a mentor to award winners."

At the same meeting, many of our caucuses were reauthorized through the 2013 Leadership Summit:  Architecture, Building Engineering, Construction and Design Caucus; Association Information Services Caucus; Baseball Caucus; Information Futurists Caucus; International Information Exchange Caucus; and Natural History Caucus.

Caucuses are meant to work in just this manner.  They can grow or dissolve, according to the environment. 

Who Should Complete the Leadership Code of Responsibility?

In short, all leaders at the associationwide level and only your unit's Board voting members should read and complete the Leadership Code of Responsibility.

The role of leaders in SLA is to advance opportunities for members to share in and accomplish the Vision and Mission of the Association.  To ensure that outcome, leaders shall respect and adhere to the code that identifies SLA Leadership’s responsibility and accountability to the Association and its members.  Leadership is defined as:  SLA's Board of Directors, all members of the association's Committees and Task Forces; for the units, a Code of Responsibility Form should be signed by the voting members of Chapter Executive and Advisory Boards, and Caucus Conveners.  As some have pointed out, only your Executive Board...those who are elected by the membership...officially have voting authority.  In reality, some units allow both their Excutive and Advisory Boards to vote.  If that is the case in your unit, then all should acknowlege their responsibility by signing the Leadership Code of Responsibility.

These forms should be signed at the beginning of their term.
