NIH Expresses Appreciation of SLA Support

On 20 June 2008, SLA received a letter from Elias A. Zerhouni, Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), expressing appreciation for SLA's support of open and timely Internet access to NIH research articles. As of 7 April 2008, articles are now required to be deposited at NIH per the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008 (H.R. 2764).  One of the Act's provisions requires the NIH to provide the public with open online access to findings from its funded research.

In February 2008, SLA and others wrote a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt thanking him for his past support of H.R. 2764 and urging him to ensure that the policy be implemented without delay.
