The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has posted comments provided by SLA in May 2008 in support of the Request for Information on the NIH Public Access Policy. NIH has communicated with SLA of their plans to analyze these comments and report findings by 30 September 30 2008.

The comments, sent in May 2008 to Elias Zerhouni, M.D. at the National Institutes of Health, expressed general support of the NIH Public Access Policy. SLA recommended shortening the embargo period and producing a list of publishers whose author publishing agreements provide for deposit with PubMed Central in a manner that is consistent with copyright law. The comments also strongly opposed the possibility of NIH acting as a dark archive and providing links to publishers’ Web sites.
