On 21 May, SLA signed on to a letter sent to members of Congress urging a comprehensive investigation into the use of the authorities granted under the USA Patriot Act and additional surveillance legislation and guidelines. The letter specifically recommends that Congress take the time now to learn how the many different authorities operate in practice, including how they interact – and overlap – to collect information about Americans. 31 December 2009 is the expiration date of three sections of the USA Patriot Act
